The good news is there is a wide array of various IT jobs and internships available today. What people should know is that the skills needed for these opportunities can vary from company to company. Job and intern seekers need to stay abreast of skills requirements in order to stay competitive and marketable in the IT workforce.
To support awareness of varying skill requirements I have completed research to allow students the opportunity to prepare for the competitive job market. The companies included in this study all have different visions and goals for their business. Each company has different skill set requirements to stay competitive in a global environment.
This study provides the knowledge needed when researching various internship opportunities.
Research was done on various companies, which included:
Abbott Laboratories Turner Broadcasting System
ADP U.S. Department of State
Airforce Academy U.S. Navy
AmericanEagle.com Wellpoint
HCSC (BCBS) HSBC-NA
IBM Kraft Foods
NASA Steelcase
SC Johnson SunTrust
Findings
From my research, I have listed the skills and knowledge needed to acquire an internship at the companies listed. These are basic general skills and should not account for the skills that are needed to compete in the global workforce. Most companies require a G.PA. of 3.0 and above and in pursuit of a IT related degree. Even though, some of these companies have specific skills listed, there is no end to the skills that can be acquired in order to stay marketable and competitive in your IT career.

Conclusion
The skills that companies are requiring for internships are basic non-negotiable talents. If you want to set yourself apart from the rest you should obtain skills that are not required such as: certifications, additional foreign languages, and post graduate studies. In order to stay afloat, it is best to stay up to date with the current technology and the business impact with that technology. Having a technical and business background will make you more marketable to companies.
