Benefits of BDPA HSCC Program (Parent's Perspective)

What We Teach the Kids - HSCC Curriculum

Registration for the 2009 HSCCT program is open.  Students may register by visiting our site: http://www.computer-competition.org.  As you may know, this year's team placed 3rd out of 23 teams.  This is our second year in a row placing third, and our third year in a row in the top three.   Combined with what our students earned from the Chicago chapter, this year's students earned $2500 each for college.  Representing our chapter was:
  • Lee Reed Jr. - Walter Payton (Graduate)
  • Carlton Means - Walter Payton (Senior)
  • Joseph Huggins Jr. - John Hope Academy (Junior)
  • Kenneth McCune - Gwendolyn Brooks (Senior)
  • Courtney Elzy - Morgan Park (Sophomore)
Our team captain for the past four years has been Lee Reed.  Mr. Reed graduated from high school and matriculated to Michigan State where he has a full scholarship.  Lee's role on our team can't be over emphasized and his presence will be sorely missed.  This means we need your help more than ever recruiting new students.

As you can see, three of our four remaining students are juniors or seniors.  If we don't get some new blood in our program next year, we could be in dire straits in 2010.  The irony that only two BDPA members have had their children in the program is never lost on me.  I hope that at least some of you will not only introduce your children to this opportunity, but encourage other family members, friends and neighbors to take advantage of what we have to offer.

I think you should also keep in mind that Mr.  Reed has earned $13,000 participating on the competition team and I don't know many parents that would call that chump change.  Additionally, he's won three computers, a printer, an iPod, a Zune, a nice watch, an XBox 360 Elite, and he'll get another great prize for participating on this year's team (maybe an iPod Touch).  Not to mention free trips to: Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, L.A., DC, and Atlanta.  Hard work but clearly worth it!

We also need volunteers to help us deliver training.  We need someone to teach a 1 day class on Windows.  This class must cover:
  • What is a file
  • How to create folders
  • The control panel
  • How file extensions affect the behavior of Windows
  • How to create Zip Files
  • The importance of security, etc.
We need someone to teach a 3 day HTML class.  This class must cover:
  • Introduction to HTML
  • Tables and Entity References
  • HTML Forms
We always need JAVA programmers and relational database experts to help us out.   Although you may choose to use or develop your own training materials, there is existing material for these classes.  Please step up for a few Saturdays and be part of the solution.

Lastly, we have a new Director of Education since I last wrote you.  It's been a few months now but Deborah DeVaughn has allowed me to pass the baton to her and she is moving the program forward with great speed.  With our support, I know she'll be successful.
