Professionals are often told to have a current resume when looking for a job and to have business cards when attending networking events. One marketing tool they should have, but don't really think about unless it's requested, is a professional bio.
If you are an executive, business owner, a professional in any industry or even a stay-at-home mom and don't have a bio, check out the top four reasons you should have one.
Spotlight Who You Are
While a resume focuses mostly on aspects of your work life, your bio gives an overview of your entire professional life. You can also include personal details like your mission, goals and philosophies, as well as family information.
Share What You Do
Share things that you do outside of work - hobbies, community service and professional, social or civic organizations and professional development - that brings you joy.
Highlight Those You Serve
Who do you serve? How do you serve them? Why do you serve them? What are the results of your service? In addition to answering these questions, note how you benefited and learned from these groups.
Brag About Yourself
Here are a few bragging points that should be included in your bio: accomplishments, awards and honors; leadership roles and responsibilities; and starting a business, programs or other initiatives. You worked hard to achieve these things, and you need to share them with the world!
Above are the top four reasons you should have professional bio. In addition to providing a comprehensive overview of your professional life, it also serves as an effective marketing tool.
