Blacks Gone Geek was founded in 2007 to promote blogging as a way to encourage students to get an education and pursue careers in IT.
We've learned a lot since then. It's definitely not as easy as it sounds. Blogs
open communication but so many folks are afraid of the repercussions of speaking
their minds in cyberspace that they don't engage in discussion groups online. Go
figure! Open and honest communication is key to solving problems, and dialoguing using web 2.0 social networking (blogs, wikis, discussion groups, podcasts) is
the best way to make that happen. So we continue to use these tools to "beat the
drums" for positive change and to stay connected with my fellow geeks who share
our passion for promoting African Americans in IT.
Why Go Geek
Our mission is to create and proliferate a social networking culture in support
of promoting African Americans in the field of Information Technology. The
sections below serve to explain the benefits of "going geek" from the various
perspectives of our community members.
Why Go Geek - High School Students
High School Students have an opportunity to share learning experiences with
their peers from around the world. They can post comments to seek help and
information from other high school students and subject matter experts from
colleges, universities, and corporations. Students are given a direct connect to
faculty advisers, college recruiters and financial aid counselors who can help
high school students make the transition into institutions of higher learning.
Students are encouraged to highlight and promote their events, programs and
activities by providing content for blog posts.
Why Go Geek - College Students
College Students have an opportunity to share learning experiences with their
peers from around the world. They can post comments to seek help and information
from other college students and subject matter experts from colleges,
universities, corporations, and entrepreneurs. Students are given a direct
connect to mentors, HR Recruiters and Hiring Managers who can help them make the
transition into the IT workforce. Students are encouraged to highlight and
promote their events, programs and activities by providing content for blog
posts.
Why Go Geek – IT Professionals
"Growth Through Professional Association"
We encourage IT Professionals to get actively involved in our
online discussion groups and community programs. IT Professionals
have a unique opportunity to share their wisdom and learning experiences and
advice to encourage students to pursue careers in IT and to help others to
succeed. They can post comments to seek help and provide help to other community
members. Nobody can be an expert in everything, yet we all have a contribution
to make to shared pool of knowledge.
Additionally, IT Professionals have a unique opportunity to serve as role models, coaches and mentors. They can team together and gain valuable work experiences solving real world business problems and they can give back to the community by volunteering to lead technology initiatives.
Finally, IT Professionals are encouraged to highlight and promote their events, programs and activities by providing content for blog posts and video podcasts.
